Haunted Stereo Cross The Sea EP Sotones Records

This is an EP that’s almost an album – 8 tracks in 31 minutes. The title track is the best thing here; it’s the best thing they’ve done, in fact, an epic indie-folk tale of loneliness with something of the gravitas of Arcade Fire: full of mournful piano, elegant violin, guitar and kalimba. The other tracks show off their multi-instrumental versatility, playing their very individual take on folk, country and indie. ‘Santy Anno’ is a rousing version of a traditional sea shanty, ‘Ivory’ absorbs folkier influences in the style of Beirut while ‘There’s No-one Colder Than A Good Drunk, Benjamin’ I can only describe as sophisticated art-folk. It’s a rich mix from a band I’m pleased to have stumbled across this year.
