Hexicon's new single promises much for The Blossom Sighs album out in March. 'Something Strange Beneath The Stars' is wistful daydreamy pop, with a spacey Super Furry Animals feel, where even the 'dark matter' in the lyrics scintillates with a melodic pop radiance. The horns and pedal steel embellishments leave you basking in their glow - and you won't regret the indulgence when you sink deep into the song. If I didn't know they were from suburban Kent, I might have located them within the literate, languorous legacy of Scottish pop, based on the extra track 'Still Life' - the rich backing and honeyed jangle reminds me of Ballboy among others. Mike and Paul of the band are also members of Allo Darlin' while Tom is a horn-tooter for hire (for Darren Hayman among others) but this single shows that they have excellent ideas of their own.
