The latest single from NYC band Mainland is definitely indie with ambition. Last year's 'Shiner EP' also maintained its integrity without being overly commercial, but here they've come up with a song that takes that vision a step higher. It can be sickening when bands try too hard to be liked/sell records, and equally as annoying when the goal is to be uber-cool over having any actual decent tunes. It's a fine balance, but one that 'Outcast' manages to get just right.
With extra synths propelling their powerpop sound, Mainland show a determination and handy way with a hook; there's a big chorus at the heart of this one. It could be a little radio-friendly for the lo-fi crowd, but this is a group who want to get heard and want to do it on their own terms, which is a commendable attitude and a tough challenge to get right. With this single they succeed, so let's hope for more of the same when the new album arrives early next year.
