In a series of singles in which bands tribute their favourites, Parquet Courts bring to our attention Connecticut’s Joey Pizza Slice (a.k.a. Son of Salami), and his song ‘Pretty Girls Is A Motherfucker’. Originally a brilliant mess of keyboard pop and tape manipulation, the Courts’ take is to use a mesmerising guitar rhythm and pick out the melodies hiding within the original xtra-lo-fi recording. And there’s no misogyny implied in the title as everything, and that includes the Parquet Courts and Joey Pizza Slice, “is a motherfucker” too. Mr Slice – who makes you think a little of early R Stevie Moore - returns the favour with his version of ‘Picture Of Health’ (from Light Up Gold) that brings out the catchy rhythms and the strong echoes of Pavement. Great single, and an introduction to another strange but beautiful creature in outsider pop.
