A solo release from ex-Strange Boy Ryan Sambol, ‘After Lunch’, which seems to be the title, is an improvised jam recorded in Bob’s Magic Music in Marrakech in 2013, and released alongside his album Now Ritual. It’s a strange collision of blues and North African rhythms that gets more intense and more interesting the longer it lasts across the single’s two sides; it’s discordant but melodic and a pounding percussion builds up to support a fantastic climax, that has the musicians all laughing with the pleasure of what they’ve achieved, unplanned. The Strange Boys were always constructing new combinations of garage, blues, folk and country and ‘After Lunch’ suggests that Sambol has the same listenable restlessness that bodes well for his other projects.
