Smoke Fairies: Gastown Third Man Records 7”

It must have been a massive high for the Smoke Fairies to be invited to Nashville to record with Jack White (he produces both sides and adds a distinctive touch to the finale of ‘River Song’) but their sound remains recognisably their own: that blend of R.P. English vocals and melancholy blues guitars. ‘Gastown’ starts like winter, with a distant feel and sense of emotions repressed, and then becomes fully animated and memorably alive right at the end. They repeat the soft/loud trick on ‘River Song’, opening like an English folk song full of pastoral imagery and ending as acid-folk, with Mr White’s electric guitar blazing and timpani rumbling; there’s a direct link to the Dead Weather sound just there but you’re always aware that the Fairies have now created their own distinctive, fragile sound that gets better with every release.
