The Flax Happy album was a bit much to digest but I much prefer these bite sized chunks, especially as they contain the two best tracks on the album, both duets with the fantastic Texan ol’ timey singer Jolie Holland. One of them, ‘Heart of Misery (The Bough)’, is the lead track on this single, an intensely sorrowful ballad with a suicidal theme (“as I climb the ruffled tree/ I know life was not meant for me”). ‘Gone’ carries on the theme (“you’ll be free from me”) but ‘Sweetheart’ lets a little sunshine into his heart. Though a Kiwi, Abel’s Americana has strong echoes of Mark Eitzel and Micah P Hinson. In smaller doses, the emotional struggles he captures on disc make a lot more impact.
