The Black Keys: Tighten Up
The big disappointment is that it turns out only the American releases of this Record Store Day single contained a code for early birds to claim a Black Keys/ Devo split single. We in the UK were misinformed and had to make do with just these two tracks from the forthcoming Brothers album – but they go some way to relieving our distress. 'Tighten Up' is the only track on the album produced by Danger Mouse and it's sophisticated blues-pop delivered in minimalist style, with the Mouse adding strident Hammond organ to Auerbach and Carney's less-is-more playing style. 'Howlin' For You' couldn't be more different. Recorded at Muscle Shoals Studios in Alabama, it has a pounding glam rock drumbeat that sounds like the Glitter Band’s 'Rock'n'Roll Part 2', a nippy little guitar noise and a direct vocal style like a playground chant. The Black Keys use pretty much the same ingredients that made the previous 5 albums so good but they continue to mix up the proportions of blues, rock, soul and psychedelia so it always sounds fresh. A hit in these ears.
