The Manhattan Love Suicides might have blazed their trail and gone, but their successors keep producing the goods. The first EP from Darren and Caroline’s new project has echoes of the Manhattans, especially on the Spectorish ‘Noise and Fury’ with its contrasting sweet pop and fuzzy backing, and in some of the lyrics (“I’m gonna pin you down and kick you in the head” for one). But their other passions surface elsewhere, especially the glorious mix of Velvet Underground murkiness and epic 60s Shangri-Las sound on ‘Crying Shame’, blitzing your brain with delicious reverb. They’re using the same chemical catalysts (C86 and 60s garage and girl groups) in different quantities to produce songs with the same thrilling kick as the Manhattans.
