The Brian Jonestown Massacre + - EP A Recordings

Many, including us, overlooked the fact that Revelation this year was a great album, a return to the BJM best, and this EP, recorded at the end of their European tour this summer, represents some of the finest elements of the Massacre. ‘Heat’ has a loping rhythm and a great Stones-y garage wooziness; ‘Everything Was Very Simple’ takes a sample and wraps it in a psychedelic mist for a time-slowed-down effect, reminiscent of the hauntology bands; and ‘Reconstruction’ has weird shoegazey effects, with big, reverby guitars and grumbling electronica in the background. Anton was called “the godfather of new psych” in a mag this year and this fine form shows that he’s willing to push that envelope even further.
