Single/Download Review

The Brian Jonestown Massacre
One EP A Recordings

Article written by Ged M - Dec 6, 2009

The EP that precedes the new Who Killed Sgt Pepper? album seems to herald a different sounding BJM, tapping into new sounds and traditions that reflect Anton Newcombe’s relocation to Iceland and Europe. ‘One’ takes his music in a more rhythmic, trance-influenced direction, with a very drummy, druggy sound. There are new collaborators too: ‘This Is The First Of Your Last Warning (Icelandic Version)’ is sung by Icelandic artist/ film maker Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir while ‘Bruttermania’ has vocals by Felix from Russian band Amazing Electronic Talking Cave. The former sounds like the space disco you might drop an E and dance to in the early 90s (I keep thinking of The Beloved) while the latter is a noise-storm that resembles Primal Scream circa XTMR. While I cherish the unpredictability of Anton Alfred Newcombe, if this didn’t have his name on it I would probably have put it away after a couple of plays.
