The Girls At Dawn It’s The Only Time Captured Tracks 12"

At some point we’ll get cheesed off with scratchy lo-fi indiepop from Brooklyn but it won't happen yet, not with the latest release from The Girls At Dawn. It’s pop stripped down to its constituent elements and the way they meander around a melody with a charming vagueness is breathtaking. Their simple, understated sound is really interesting; rather than an absence of production, each instrument and singer is so distinct you feel that you could reach into the speaker and touch each of the lean but tough sinews that hold their songs together: Erin's reluctant guitar, Sarah’s softly pattering drums, Ana’s gently pulsing bass and their dreamy collective voices. ‘It’s The Only Time’ is catchy minimal post-punk with surf-style guitar and a bubbling psych-pop sound while ‘Tomorrow Will Be Yesterday’ is a New York girl-group drama, voices in harmony as their hearts break in Shangri-Las style: "I can still see your face when I close my eyes". However we feel about the fruits of Brooklyn recording studios, there’ll always be a place in our hearts for fuzzy pop as good as this.
