The Rayographs

Bingo! Occasionally, all this listening and reviewing will uncover a gem and here’s one undisputed diamond. The Rayographs are Astrud Steehouder, Jessamine Tierney and Amy Hurst and their ‘Francis’ has a powerful air of menace, build around garage riffs, ominous basslines and impatient drums. It’s not just the fact that they’re women that we compare it to the Breeders, Patti Smith and, on ‘Yellow Hair’, early PJ Harvey; it’s because this is such an accomplished (second) single that we think it worth mentioning in the same breath as those others (and there’s a bit of Nick Cave in there too). This is a brilliant release from a band we’ll all be talking about soon and if you want vinyl rather than download, there are just 500 copies (in the shops 20 July).
