The Soft City Four Stories EP Calico Cat Records (7" and download)

I was surprised to see that The Soft City have such indiepop history; formed by ex-Comet Gain and Kicker chap Phil Sutton, who’s now relocated to New York, they had a Cloudberry single in 2007, an album on Plastilina this year and their debut gig was at the 2009 New York Popfest. This EP is addictive indiepop of the sort that we know and love (and strongly reminds this listener of the much-underrated Kicker) but draws from a wide range of interesting sources too. ‘Dear Claire’ is nicely stretched out with a spine of jangly guitars and piping organ very reminiscent of the great Kiwi band the Chills, maintaining a driving rhythm for a dreamy four and a half minutes without losing your attention. Meanwhile, there’s the clear influence of 60s French pop on ‘Let Me On Board’ that makes for a smart and engaging song. If, as the TV series proclaimed, “there are eight million stories in the naked city”, the four stories in The Soft City are especially worth hearing.
