The Victorian English Gentlemens Club:
Bored In Belgium This Is Fake DIY Records

I can’t agree with the sentiment (what about Belgian chocolate and beer?) but the single is mesmerising, from one of the most interesting young British guitar bands. Twisted lyrics and combustible percussion combine with shiny “la-la-la” backing and big melodic choruses for a memorable start to the year. You can hear the Sonic Youth and Pixies inspirations – especially in the version (‘Bored to Death in Belgium’) sung by Louise, but they wear them lightly. Top-notch, out-of-left-field anthemic indiepop.
