The Young Republic
Recession Special EP self released

Article written by Paul M - Aug 31, 2009

Recession Special
Recession Special
Recession Special is a ridiculously cheap EP produced by the Young Republic as a taster for their forthcoming long player (due mid October). It features five tracks, four of which will be on the album, though one is presented here in a different form. The immediate impression is of the Tennessee band attempting to build on their terrific debut by expanding their sound to incorporate other less indie flecked folk influences. Certainly the driving Dylan blues of The Wolf sounds a long way from the cute arrangements on 12 Tales from Winter City and Sam Clemens has a singer songwriter pop simplicity of Badly Drawn Boy. There's even a cover of the 100 year old Tin Pan Alley number Shine on Harvest Moon though thankfully that won't be on the new album. The two real gems here though are The Alchemist and Balletesque. The latter in a pre-War version is all yelped "Hey!"s and jagged strings while the former is a glorious full orchestral five and a half minute brooding epic, very much in the 12 Tales style with Saporiti's pleading vocals to the fore and a galloping finale. Stirring stuff indeed and a mere $5 from the band's website.
