Dance To The Radio 4x12”: Volume 3 Dance To the Radio 12”)

Article written by Ged M - Nov 25, 2009

Another Dance to the Radio compilation, another set of new bands, no exciting new discoveries. Only the offering from Leeds-based Olfar stands out. A member of Bear Driver and Samsa, Olfar’s ‘Husk’ (only a demo but what promise!) is melodic, quirky indie-rock on Modest Mouse lines. The Brighton trio Esben And the Witch play spacey synthpop with ample samples in a Broadcast style but their ‘Skeleton Swoon’ is a bit too ethereal and insubstantial to take hold, although it has its moments. Chickenhawk from Leeds are a metal band of the flimsiest kind, their ‘Scorpieau’ being lightweight hardcore. Manchester’s Airship have some neat hooks but their aspiring-to-be-anthemic-indie ‘Spirit Party’ sounds just like Coldplay. The hits vs misses ration isn’t in the listener’s favour on this release.
