Victoria and Jacob
Festival WIAIWYA/ Fika Recordings 7”

Article written by Ged M - May 19, 2013

When I first heard of them, Victoria Harrison and Jacob Mayfield were a lo-fi, very indie folkatronica duo, and a decent one at that. Now they’re preened and polished almost to a major label (or, at least, a big indie) sheen and clearly heading for beyond-indie stardom. ‘Festival’ is shimmery, melodic, euphoric, Balearic electropop, of the sort usually cooked up in some expensive Swedish music factory, yet it’s out on the small but perfectly formed WIAIWYA/Fika. It’s not my usual bag of dolly mixtures but it has a clear pop quality that will take them far. And if the A-side is too sweetly pop, the flip, their cover of The Church’s 'Under the Milky Way', will more than compensate, a peach of stripped-down pop in the XX-style, with a delicate electronic pulse beneath a gently twanging guitar and Victoria's emotion-choked 3am voice. Quality.
