Wanda Jackson Thunder On The Mountain Third Man Recordings 7”

This is weird: a pensioner covering a pensioner! Wanda Jackson sings a recent Bob Dylan song (from 2006’s Modern Times), changing his bizarre references to Alicia Keys so that they mention her old mate Jerry Lee, while Jack White and a legion of sessionaires back her with masses of brass and piano and a White lead guitar solo. It’s hyperactive rock’n’roll from the rest of the band and a credible performance from the Queen of Rockabilly herself but the interest comes mainly from hearing Wanda J still singing this sort of music at age 73, 50 years after she first made her name. The b-side ‘Dust On the Bible’ seems more fitting, a devotional gospel-country tale previously sung by Hank Williams and Kitty Wells but Robin Ince et al may want to avoid. A weird 45 overall, Jack White is clearly going backwards in time down there in Memphis.
