West Norwood Cassette Library Collision / Detection v2Front and Follow

Release number two in Front and Follow's Collision/Detection series is completely different to the first. Where Psychological Strategy Board submitted four tracks of unsettling mind pollution, West Norwood Cassette Library give us a more accessible but no less enjoyable set of bouncing braindance.
‘Collision Bump’ is a thumpingly fine techno track reminiscent of Si Begg. The main attraction, for me, is ‘What’s Going On (Stuff is Happening)’. This is a tremendous slice of skewed junglism of the sort Warp, Rephlex and Planet Mu used to produce on a regular basis; Squarepusher once produced music of this quality before he exiled himself to the seventh circle of noodling solo bass-hell. Over a franticly twitching beat, a very confused not-quite-MC asks “Bob, what’s goin’ on, stuff is happening?” One particularly glorious moment is a bass-drop two thirds of the way through that sounds like a mobile phone vibrating in a drawer at Aphex Twin’s house. Completing an irresistible release are two weird sonic doodles that in a perfect universe would open and close the BBC news.
A final mention should go to Paul Loudon’s brilliant artwork that perfectly captures the wonky greatness of this producer.
